Survival Guide for Parents of College Freshmen and beyond . . .
Let me know if you would like me to visit your Book Club or parent group as a discussion leader for my book -A New Beginning: A Survival Guide for Parents of College Freshmen (3rd edition)
ISBN#096612014-0. Group rates are available at $10 for a limited time only; Retail: $14.95. Visit my website www.KayeMcGarry.com for more information or 704-995-2274.
This book is an easy read with which parents of college freshmen will readily identify. Parents of college-bound high school students will benefit greatly from my experience as a parent of 4 children and as a professional educator. The issues discussed in this book - communication, academics, finances, and values - are not unique to a select few, as every parent can anticipate some of these challenges.

Movie/Documentary "Race To Nowhere"
Wow! This documentary is well done. My husband and I watched it today in Charlotte, NC, at the Epicentre Theatre uptown. I would highly recommend parents, teachers, administrators, and anyone who works with children, adolescents, or adults, to watch this movie. Lots of food for thought. I welcome what is on your mind. If you have seen it or read about it, please share your thoughts with me. I will respond.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools BUDGET 2011-12
Your Board of Education has had one budget workshop thus far to start the discussion on how to "spend" the money we have. How to prioritize? What is most important in this school system? The Operating Budget for 2010-11 is $1.15 BILLION. This is in addition to the Capital budget. Mecklenburg County has 175 public schools. 19,000 employees - about half are teachers. Go to http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/ for further information on how the budget is allocated. What changes do you feel we need to make to live within our means? How to best educate 135,000 students? I welcome your input. I feel we are still top heavy in administration. Your thoughts?

Why serve on the School Board?
Folks ask me why I would continue to serve on the CMS Board of Education for 7+ years? My response: I do it for the children and families in Mecklenburg County. These are folks who are working so hard to earn a living and raise their children with faith, and values, and morals. I have no idea what political party they are in, and I do not care. They care for their children and make sure they do homework and prepare for the next day. They are depending on those elected to serve on the School Board to make decisions for them. It reminds me of when my 4 children were going through K-12. I had no time to figure out the politics of the School Board. Now, I know how important it is to listen, study issues, do my homework and vote responsibly as an at-large member of the Mecklenburg County School Board. Yes, the children and families in Mecklenburg County are the ones who I work for.
