Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools BUDGET 2011-12
Your Board of Education has had one budget workshop thus far to start the discussion on how to "spend" the money we have. How to prioritize? What is most important in this school system? The Operating Budget for 2010-11 is $1.15 BILLION. This is in addition to the Capital budget. Mecklenburg County has 175 public schools. 19,000 employees - about half are teachers. Go to http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/ for further information on how the budget is allocated. What changes do you feel we need to make to live within our means? How to best educate 135,000 students? I welcome your input. I feel we are still top heavy in administration. Your thoughts?

Kaye - I like your idea of redesign. I had been thinking about the idea of zero-based budgeting. Instead of "eliminating costs", why not start at the beginning. One high-achieving child; what services do we need to provide that child with the education we want to provide them and what areas of cost are involved? THen create other "students"; an under-achieiving child, a child with special learning needs - and determine what cost is necessary to educate each of them. Then decide what administrative support is needed to support those educational needs.
Eliminating costs preserves a system that is clearly not working well enough.
